<itunes:subtitle>The Best in Books</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>Massachusetts School of Law is inviting writers and scholars who publish in the fields of history, current events and international affairs to come to the school and speak about their work.

School officials believe that conversations among authors, students and faculty, and members of the public will be an important part of the intellectual climate to be found north of Boston.

Each event will feature a presentation by the author, followed by a period of discussion and a question and answer session. For those interested in attending these presentations, admission is free and no reservations are required. Through an arrangement with the Andover Bookstore, books will be for sale at each event, and the authors will sign copies.

"Massachusetts School of Law is offering this series because it is not only a law school, but also a major intellectual center for the Merrimack Valley,â said Lawrence R. Velvel, the schoolâs founding dean. âIts award winning television programs on major societal topics and important books, its many internet âpublications,â its forthcoming series of conferences on crucial topics like presidential power and changes in economic thinking, and its new series of presentations by the authors of important books are all part of the schoolâs effort to present major intellectual events for the Merrimack Valley.â âWe are thrilled to be working with the Massachusetts School of Law on this great new book event series,â said John Hugo, manager of the Andover Bookstore. âThe Andover Bookstore has been serving the local community for over 200 years. These new events are a fine continuation of that service.â

Michael Meltsner discusses his book "The Making of a Civil Rights Lawyer."

Michael Meltsner appeared at the Massachusetts School of Law as part of the ongoing "Noted Authors Series." This podcast contains his full remarks.

About the Book:

"It was not until I arrived at the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund that I learned my profession, how to work with colleagues and clients, and how it might feel to grow up in the law." So begins Michael Meltsner's vivid account of how as a lawyer for Muhammad Ali, for the doctors who ended Jim Crow at American hospitals, and for scores of death row inmates he became such a deeply involved activist in the civil rights movement. Part memoir and part critical study, The Making of a Civil Rights Lawyer offers both a personalized history of the civil rights movement from a participant's perspective, and the compelling account of how a lawyer committed to social change discovered himself in his work.

Debbie Hagan appeared at the Massachusetts School of Law as part of the ongoing "Noted Authors Series."

About the Book:

Against the Tide is a carefully constructed reporting of the Massachusetts School of Law's struggle to become a fully accredited legal educational institution for minority students and/or those with limited financial resources. It is a detailed account of several legal educators' struggle to diversify legal education against corrupt personalities and politically influential establishment forces.

James Reston, Jr. discusses his new book "Dogs of God: Columbus, the Inquisition, and the Defeat of the Moors"

James Reston, Jr. appeared as part of the ongoing "Noted Authors Series" at the Massachusetts School of Law to discuss his new book "Dogs of God."

From Publishers Weekly- About the Book:
Veteran journalist and author Reston brings to life three key elements of Spanish history that intertwined in 1492. Columbus takes a back seat to the Inquisition and the defeat of Islamic Granada, but plays a key role in demonstrating their relationship to the rise of empire and the modern state. Reston (Warriors of God; Galileo) has done tremendous research, though the shadows of his mostly older sources tend to show in stereotypes of the treasure-hungry, Machiavellian Ferdinand and the handsome adventurer Columbus charming Isabella. While he reduces the order of Dominicans to their role as inquisitors, he generally does justice to the complexities of his subject, examining the worlds of Christians, Muslims and Jews with sympathy and irony, and incorporating portraits of several lesser-known figures. The Inquisition emerges from political as much as religious circumstances, and the clerics presented run the gamut from saints to careerists, rabble-rousing preachers and prophets. Parallel civil wars in Christian and Muslim Spain and images of mobs on both sides suggest the interplay of popular feeling, government policy and theological debate. Despite minor disappointments in the details, this is a highly entertaining, thoughtful and complex narrative that both introduces and analyzes a greatly misunderstood era.
Copyright  Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc.
